How much does a mixer matter?

Last night I went over to my best friend’s place to help her bake a cake for her fiancĂ©’s birthday.
She has so many talents, unfortunately baking and cooking is definitely not one of them.  Recently engaged, she has been experimenting more and more in the kitchen which I think is great.  Who cares if you make a mistake, that’s the only way to learn.  Needless to say she doesn’t know much about kitchen tools and machinery, why would she? Her mixer says it all.

Baking with this fine antique still got the job done....my what a long way stand mixers have come.
What I liked about this machine was that the beater could detach and become a hand mixer, which really comes in handy and I really liked how it made me appreciate my new candy apple red Kitchen Aid artisan mixer that much more.  To answer my own question...the type of mixer matters...for me anyway!

The final cake
Your a lucky man :)

"Flowers are love's truest language"

Who doesn't like receiving flowers? Especially if they are on a cake!   I love the look of fresh flowers on a baked goods but you have to be sure that they are organic or not sprayed with any harmful chemicals.

Or you can make them yourself with gum paste and fondant :).

I realize that not everyone has the time or patience to make gumpaste flowers but they truly are sooo easy to make if you have the right tools to practice.  The project can become a little time consuming, but once they dry they last forever.  When I know I've got some time I make a bunch of different kinds of flowers.  Once they are completely dry and stored carefully decorating becomes so much faster when I got some ready to go.
Just place them in a box or tin with tissue paper and they are ready whenever you need them.  I like to stock up on them so that way when its time to decorate a cake I dont have to worry about getting flowers done..they are already made and I can just place them on the cake.

Here are some of the tools and cutters I use to make flowers I love.

Flower cutters, flower veiners, roll'n'cut mat, small rolling pin, small off set tapered spatula, artist palette, paint brush and gum glue.  All of these items can be purchased at specialty cake stores. I find bulk barn, Golda's Kitchen to have a great selection.

leave to dry at least 24hrs

Here I have gumpaste tool kit, rose petal cutters and flower foam.

Pink fondant and gumpaste paste.

Its not the nicest rose but I'm still practicing. Larger ones are a little more challenging
Now go and make some!

Flower Power!!

Here is a cake similar to the last flower cake I made for my bf’s Oma. I'm so proud of it and although   Cupcakes with sprinkles make me happy…cakes ridiculously covered with flowers make my heart sing ...

I added a butterfly to this one- also gumpaste

I piped the leaves using leftover buttercream that I tinted green

The roses are made with gumpaste...the rest of the flowers were done in royal icing.

cupcakes with sprinkles make me happy

Who doesn’t love a cupcake? They are so damn cute and yummy

i used a giant star tip to make the swirl...it uses up A LOT of icing, but looks great

A cake for a future hockey star

I realized that it is extremely hard for me to try and decorate a cake and not put a single flower on it! I made this cake for a boy who plays hockey. So I dont think he would have liked flowers...but I used his teams colours and made a puck out of chocolate for him...the puck has his team logo on it too.
